DAVID LLEWELLYN & IDA KRISTIN At Folk Alliance International

27th ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL FOLK ALLIANCE CONFERENCE logo
February 17th-21st – Westin Hotel, Kansas City, MO
Official Showcases, Guerrilla Showcases, Workshops, Exhibits and Keynote Speakers.
Attendees from the US, Canada, Australia, Europe, New Zealand, Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales and Japan are set to converge on one of the largest, annual events for the folk music industry.

WELSH/SWEDISH DUO DAVID LLEWELLYN & IDA KRISTIN
Sharing an uplifting chemistry of intimate voices and interwoven guitars, their toe-to-toe debut album “Songs Around The Kitchen Table” captures the spur-of-the-moment freshness of a live performance.

SATKT_Cover_300dpi_CMYK1 Paired at a songwriting retreat in Sweden in 2008, Welshman David Llewellyn and Swedish Ida Kristin were presented with an afternoon to write a song about a couple sitting in a coffee shop, and discovered a magical connection that has transformed into a finely honed acoustic duo. The spark kindled by this fortuitous collaboration uniting these two acclaimed solo artists, has resulted in the release of their debut folk album, Songs Around The Kitchen Table – a beguiling toe-to-toe recording, infused with tenderness and intimacy.

The moment we started collaborating, it was our minds meeting our souls; exhilarating, familiar and challenging all at once. We’re pretty strong-minded people, but we’ve let our hearts lead on this one. We both knew in our gut that we wanted to follow what was unfolding, and because neither of us are that tied to the rigors of genre, we could be open and perceptive to each other’s creative ideas.

From relaxed songwriting evenings spent around the kitchen table in David’s current home in Nashville TN, the 11-song sparsely scored acoustic album sparkles with seven of David & Ida’s fervent compositions and some well chosen covers.

Realizing the effortless synergy of how they listened and followed each other in real time, David & Ida captured their interwoven harmonies and guitars in the truest way possible; by setting up a few mics and performing their repertoire on the spot. Talented musician friends from around Nashville joined in adding subtle flavors: Robin Ruddy (dobro) and Tim Lorsch (violin/cello) on “This Morning Blues.” Catherine Styron Marx (piano) on “The Real Peter Pan,” John Mock (whistle/accord) on “God’s Waltz,” Bruce Baxter (accordion) on “Only God Knows” and Dave Jacques (bass guitar) on “Coffee Shop Song.”

The album opens with the trans-Atlantic co-write “This Morning Blues” – an emotional story of parting lovers after a short but profound love affair. “Only God Knows” – asks the big questions: “Why is this world in our safe keeping?” and “Why does ice cream melt so soon..?” “Coffee Shop Song” is a playful take on the universal theme of relationship tit for tat, and is the first song that David & Ida wrote together on that serendipitous songwriting retreat. Inspired by their connection, Ida’s song “The Real Peter Pan” and David’s “Homeward,” were written for each other. “Just Surrender” is a rallying call for those of us, who ride the fence of love, to say YES!

405_cut2_300dpi The classic love song “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” by Ewan MacColl – sung as a duet, showcases the heavenly blend and emotional depth of the duo’s voices. During the recording process, David and Ida stepped outside on the porch for an impromptu one-take video shoot of “59th Street Bridge Song” (Paul Simon), quickly garnering a lot of interest on YouTube. The closing song “Turn! Turn! Turn!” is a loving homage to one of the great folk singer-songwriters of the 60′s - Pete Seeger.

David and Ida each bring a successful and intriguing lineage to their duo partnership. São Paulo, Brazil born Swedish singer-songwriter Ida Kristin has written and recorded two critically acclaimed solo albums. Her debut, Stumble, was released on V2 records (Virgin) in 2001, after being signed up following her very first gig. The title track was featured in the movie Capricciosa, and Stumble also includes a duet with Ryan Adams, Love Is How We Stay Alive. In 2005, Ida issued the exploratory follow-up album Comoção. Nashville-based Welsh folk singer David Llewellyn‘s self-titled debut CD was released in the US on DabHand Records in 2004 and quickly gained top 10 radio plays on the Folk DJ charts. It has proved a fast seller at gigs and house concerts around the US and back home, with tours in Wales, Ireland and the UK. In addition, David was a Grand Prize Winner of the prestigious 2008 International John Lennon Songwriting Contest with his song Take Us Down – a loving tip of the hat to his upbringing in the coal mining valleys of South Wales – and he is also a winner of the Kerrville Folk Festival “New Folk” Competition.

10616025_10152202930566852_3936111781273218962_n One Take Jake
No Depression Review
Jacob’s album “One-Take Jake” is filled with crystalline, pyrotechnical guitar playing but he has infused his performance with personality. It runs right down his arms into his fingers, onto the strings — missing not a grain of warmth and meticulous guitar-spirit.
The guitar is not just an instrument in the hands of Jacob Johnson – it’s his soul-mate.
His original songs are wonderfully performed and sound as if we may have heard them before. Then, in an effort to confirm his ability to interpret he whips out a Johnny Cash tune: “Big River” and virtually reinvents the song.

Named a 2014 Year End Favorites by Kelly Walker, host of The Sundilla Music Radio Hour on Troy Public Radio in Auburn, AL

Johnson sounds like Norman Rockwell paintings and the open road. He is a virtuoso, expressing a working comprehension of dozens of techniques and styles. He has blended and blurred the lines of genres to craft a sound he calls ‘Neo-Acoustic Folk/Funk’ .” – The Florence Morning News (Florence, SC)

Marc Douglas Berardo is the kind of hard working, fast moving, adventure seeking, keen observer who lives for the story and the song.In what amounts to song length works of fiction, Berardo’s sharply drawn portraits cast a net on unusual and beguiling characters and places. With a painter’s eye for detail, and music firmly rooted in the great American sound, Berardo sings about circus retirees, expatriates in Florida rum bars, union iron workers, old poets, aimless New York City debutantes, near death car crashes, hard nosed fishermen and of course, the changes that experience brings to everyone. He does this “simply and well” with what Rambles Cultural Magazine calls: “careful images and great tunes.”

Storch has toured 35 states over 7 years, bringing her soulful roots-pop to bars, coffeehouses, living rooms and cafes, and becoming, along the way, a live performer of joyful strength and riveting, emotional power.

Teresa’s album “Come Clean” made it on a few best of lists and earned reviews. Best of 2014 Acoustic Revival from Stevens Point WI, 90FM also streams at 90M.org with hosts Pat Sullivan and Jim Canales.

No Depression Review While every song, in my opinion, is meat and potatoes, some are fillet mignon. It’s a matter of taste. But the musical cuisine here has ingredients that are sure to satisfy many appetites. Teresa Storch deserves attention for the recipes she shares on this platter.307297_2404288467016_1393638516_n
