Many from the folk community will arrive at NERFA on Thursday. The highlight of the evening is the ever popular Suzi Wollenberg Folk DJ Showcase. Suzi Wollenberg was a well-known figure at both the Folk Alliance International (FAI) and the North East Regional Folk Alliance (NERFA) conferences. For several years she was one of the coordinators of the annual NERFA Folk DJ Showcase, and following her sudden passing August 8 2009, that event was renamed the Suzi Wollenberg Folk DJ Showcase in her honor and memory.

Danielle Miraglia
2009 NERFA Formal Showcase Artist Danielle Miraglia returns to NERFA this year with a sneak preview of her upcoming album “Glory Junkies.” Danielle is closer to her musical roots than ever on this one which combines classic rock, blues and soul. The rich songwriting that has made Miraglia a stand out is also evident throughout “Glory Junkies,” along with a new level of musicianship.

Danielle Miraglia Pic

Alternate Root says “Danielle Miraglia’s guitar work keeps Delta traditions alive. Her steady thumb and playing style trace a direct line to the blues of the field and chicken shacks. Vocally, Danielle’s voice digs in, twisting within the delivery, seeming to break but more likely soaring before the fall.

Susan Cattaneo’s latest Americana roots album Haunted Heart is a fulsome visionary work. Catteneo offers several human dramas in her lyrics while serving up her smooth timbre in a variety of crisp, roots musical settings. She sprawls her authentic beauty over naturalistic sounds capes conjured by pedal steel, lap steel, slide guitar, Hammond organ, Wurlitzer piano, transistor organ, and many other instruments that offer a pristine sound and emotive joy or sorrow.” Bill Copeland Music News

What stories hide in the dark corners of the heart? Susan Cattaneo brings these tales to light in her fourth record, Haunted Heart. Blending the music of Americana, roots rock, and folk with a hint of country, this intimate album is sure to hold your attention and capture your heart.
The album features a who’s who of New England’s best roots musicians including Kevin Barry (Ray LaMontagne), Lyle Brewer (Ryan Montbleau) Stu Kimball (Bob Dylan) Duke Levine (J. Geils Band), Richard Gates (Melissa Ferrick) and Jimmy Ryan, along with the some amazing out of towners, Kenny White (Peter Wolf, Shawn Colvin) on keys and Marco Giovino (Buddy Miller, Robert Plant) on drums.

Susan Cattaneo is not afraid of the dark. A powerful singer and sophisticated songwriter, Susan has seen the darkness in the corners and sings about it fearlessly. Following in the footsteps of Matraca Berg, Kim Richey, Lucinda Williams and Gretchen Peters, the well-respected Boston artist combines vivid storytelling with a modern songwriter’s spin. Call it New England Americana with a twang. Respectful of tradition, but not bound by it, Susan’s rootsy vibe blends rock, folk, soul and blues with a healthy dose of country.
I’m a songwriting geek, I appreciate the work that goes into creating a song. Great songwriters have an authentic point of view, but they are also artisans, masters of the craft. I’m proud that my songs have something to say, and that they are carefully crafted.” Not a surprising statement from an artist who is also a Songwriting Professor at the world-renowned Berklee College of Music.

A Jersey girl with a Southwest heart, Susan grew up on a farm in the Garden State but spent her summers on a ranch in Arizona. She began her music career early, singing six-part harmony with her family and performing country songs by the campfire. She played in bands during her college years and performed in many clubs in New York City while pursuing a career in television (she is an Emmy-nominated writer/producer and NY State Broadcasters Award winner) before turning to music full time. For a number of years, Susan wrote in Nashville and raised two children. In 2009, she returned to performing. Since then, she has released three records and toured nationally and in Italy. Her songs have been played on country stations all over the world, charting on the Americana Chart, the Music Row Chart and the European Country Chart. She has opened for or shared the stage with artists such as Amy Grant, Rose Cousins, David Wilcox, Dave Alvin and The Guilty Women, Son Volt, Melissa Ferrick, Paula Cole, Travis Tritt, Bonnie Bishop, Ellis Paul and Huey Lewis and The News.

About Limelight Magazine Music Awards ~ We are pleased to announce the nominees for this year’s sixth annual Limelight Magazine Music Awards. Like prior years, the nominating process was completely fan driven, with the exception of “Song of the Year” which was nominated by radio DJs who support the local music scene. We received so many nominations for “Video of the Year” that we were able to break down the category into two separate ones, “Video of the Year” (Solo) and “Video of the Year” (Group). Furthermore, we added one new category: “Young Performer of the Year.”

As to how the nominees were selected, we simply took the top eight artists who received the most nominations by e-mail and placed them in each category. Some bands received as many as 40 nominations. Anyone who won an award in a specific category last year is ineligible to be nominated for that same award this year, unless it’s for new music being released (such as a song, album, or video).
