The Third Fret Coffeehouse presents contemporary folk-pop award winning singer-songwriter Sloan Wainwright at Cotuit Center for the Arts on Saturday, November 1, at 7:30 PM. Opening the night is award winning singer-songwriter Loretta Hagen.

Sloan Wainwright has a warm contralto voice, an easy command of a variety of American musical styles, from pop and folk to jazz and blues, and a gift for songwriting.

She grew up in a very musical and music-loving family who enjoyed classical, jazz, and popular styles. Her father, Loudon Wainwright, Jr., was a columnist for Life magazine who also wrote songs. Her older brother is folk music legend Loudon Wainwright III, who married singer Kate McGarrigle. Their three children, Sloan’s nephew and nieces, Rufus Wainwright, Martha Wainwright and Lucy Wainwright Roche, carry on the family tradition.

Her father’s writing encouraged Sloan to begin writing songs as a young child—songs about her cat, her best friend, her grandmother. She developed her songwriting style in Greenwich Village, where she met a wide variety of artists, writers, and musicians from whom she drew inspiration.

Though she and her brother are close, Sloan notes that they have different musical styles, different perspectives on the world, and different approaches to singing and songwriting. “We sing about personal issues,” she said. “I am more cryptic, and he is more confessional.

Sloan has recorded seven critically acclaimed CDs and continues to write, sing, and perform. She has also written numerous musical compositions for theater and dance and teaches at master songwriter series, workshops, and song camps, including the Cape Cod Songwriters Retreat in Provincetown.

Opening the evening is Loretta Hagen described as ‘Heart Drivin’, Soul Fillin’, Award Winnin’, Folk Americana.‘ She has a rich alto voice and her strong songwriting skills have led her to win many awards, including a 2013 JAM Awards’ “Top Female Songwriter of the Year,” JAM nomination for “Album of the Year,” winner of the NJ Folk Festival Songwriter Competition and designation as a CT Folk Festival finalist.

She has performed at premiere venues across the Northeast and Nashville, sharing the stage with Pete Seeger, Roger McGuinn, Steve Forbert, Richie Havens, Gretchen Wilson, among others.

Her work has been compared to Mary Chapin Carpenter, John Gorka, Lucy Kaplansky and other artists who sing about the emotions and realities of daily life. Her melodies, one reviewer wrote, “leave folks feeling as if they are listening to their own stories set to song.

Hagen recently released her third CD, “Mud and Stone,” which features uplifting ballads, up-tempo country swing, and cool, bluesy grooves. “Mud and Stone” debuted at #10 on Folk DJ Charts, consistently #1 on the Roots Music Report for NJ, #5 Top 50 Folk Albums RMR, and is receiving airplay throughout the US, Canada and Europe. Her songs are often deeply personal, as in her last album “Sundown Till Dawn,” in which she wrote about her mother, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. The ballad was used on the soundtrack of “10 Mountains 10 Years,” a film about a group of mountain climbers who are raise awareness and funds about the disease.

Tickets are $25, $22 for seniors, and $20 for members. Premium tables with wine are available. Cotuit Center for the Arts is at 4404 Route 28 in Cotuit. For more information, visit artsonthecape.org or call 508-428-0669.

Sloan Wainwright

Sloan Wainwright

Defying standard categorization, singer/songwriter Sloan Wainwright consistently demonstrates her easy command of a variety of American musical styles — pop, folk, jazz and blues — held together by the melodious tone of her rich contralto. With the end result being a unique and soulful hybrid.

Her family tree (brother and folk-music luminary Loudon Wainwright, nephew Rufus Wainwright, nieces Martha Wainwright and Lucy Wainwright Roche) reads like a who’s who of contemporary folk music. Sloan’s incredible gift is not only her unique songwriting ability but also her dramatically voiced rendition of original songs.

She’s folk influenced, but the real star here is her voice. Warm and smoky and smooth, it makes her earthy, ominous lyrics seem all the more intense.

With a solid and impressive discography of 7 original CD releases to her credit, Sloan continues to write, sing and perform live.In addition, Sloan has written numerous musical compositions for theater and dance and teaches at many of the best-known master songwriter series and workshops. Sloan’s open spirit and first-hand experience is welcome –year after year– in the musical classrooms of such prestigious song camps as Richard Thompson’s Frets and Refrains, The Swannanoa Gathering, Summersongs, Wintersongs, and WUMB Radio’s Summer Acoustic Music Week (SAMW).

From Sloan- “Since this is my first time on Pledge, I’m very excited for the chance to put a record out like this and for you to be right here the whole time.
So please join in the fun as we head to some brand new places in music together!

Greg Klyma ~ Another Man's Treasure cover

Greg Klyma ~ Another Man’s Treasure cover

Greg Klyma is a prolific songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and seasoned performer, bringing to every stage a catalog of material that assumes his audiences are both smart and able to laugh. His birth date puts him squarely in the middle of Generation X, but Greg is an old-school troubadour. His enduring themes, articulate and amusing stories, and populist ideals make him one of those rare young artists who is carrying the torch of Woody and Ramblin’ Jack. He rolls in off the road, pulls out a guitar, and proceeds to take us back to the basics: family, love, gratitude, and laughter. It’s the timeless art of the true troubadour, keeping alive the American folk tradition.
Greg Klyma

Greg Klyma

Klyma, a 2012 NERFA Formal Showcase Artist, delivers an emotionally charged blend of fan favorites from recent tours, and never-before-heard material on his eighth album, Another Man’s Treasure. Long known as a passionate and largely positive populist, Klyma’s new album showcases an impressively matured song-writing talent. He seizes a spot in the Top 50 coming in at #47.

Best New Artist of 2013 DAVEY O.
testingforrustcover It’s no surprise that Buffalo, NY born and bred songwriter Davey O. has been described by Buffalo News critic Jeff Miers as having “a journalist’s eye for detail and poet’s ear for the well-turned observation.” Embarking on a decade-plus journey that has resulted in a collection of justly-earned, highly introspective songs, Davey crafts pure Americana that is not of the social and political consciousness, but drawn from the deep well of experience and human emotion – no hackneyed story lines, no insincere polish, just an unflinching poet’s look at life. The characters woven seamlessly into stories of which the song itself becomes the soundtrack for the movie playing inside the listener’s head. 20120318-12192 “Testing For Rust” which has grabbed the attention of Dan Herman is #49 of the Top 50 and BEST NEW ARTIST OF 2013

She will make you laugh hysterically, wax nostalgic and cry tears of joy all in the course of one song. GUITARS IN THE CLASSROOM calls Cary “the Anne LaMott of songwriting…except she can get to the heart of things in 3 minutes instead of 200 pages.” Cary is a past winner of the Kerrville Folk Festival’s prestigious New Folk Competition as well as finishing 2nd and 3rd at the 2012 Rocky Mountain Folks Festival and Telluride Bluegrass Festival competitions, respectively. Don’t miss Cary Cooper. Loretta Hagen and her critically acclaimed album “Mud and Stone” released in March 2012, comes in at #74 Top 100. Loretta delivers rich alto vocals, polished award winning lyrics and tightly woven harmonies; the hallmark of her musical career.

Dan Herman & Loretta Hagen Hoboken 4th of July

A 2013 JAM Awards “Top Female Songwriter of the Year” JAM Award nominee for “Album of the Year”, NJ Folk Festival Songwriter Competition Winner, and CT Folk Festival Finalist, Loretta recently released her third CD, Mud and Stone, featuring uplifting heartfelt ballads, playful up-tempo country swing, and cool bluesy grooves. “Mud and Stone” debuted at #10 on Folk DJ Charts, consistently #1 on the Roots Music Report for NJ, #5 Top 50 Folk Albums RMR, and receiving airplay throughout the US, Canada and Europe. Loretta has shared the stage with Pete Seeger, Roger McGuinn, Steve Forbert, Richie Havens, Gretchen Wilson to name a few and plays premiere stages across the Northeast. Loretta’s melodies leave folks feeling as if they are listening to their own stories set to song. Featured in No Depression, music critic John Apice describes the album as “This effort [Mud and Stone] is first class, top tier, a true contender as an artist to reckon with.”

Buskin & Batteau earned a spot in the Top 100 coming in at #77. Buskin & Batteau have been winning hearts and minds with their soulful acoustic balladry and fun-filled performances for more years than they care to remember. Their current album “Love Remembered, Love Forgot” continues to receive rave reviews and airplay.

The Washington Post called their work “an irresistible amalgam of melodic, sensual pop, folkie grit and killer wit.” And while their humor runs the gamut from topical irony (“Second Homeless”) to terminal silliness (“Jews Don’t Camp”), it’s their unique combination of instrumental virtuosity (piano and violin, primarily, though both play other instruments as well), soaring vocal harmonies and unparalleled lyric-writing that prompts the standing ovations and rhapsodic reviews: “The most musically sophisticated act in folk”The New York Times; “Acoustic Heaven” The Boston Globe. And with the help of uber-percussionist Marshal Rosenberg, they manage to kick the rhythm pretty hard for a couple of seasoned troubadors.
Famous in the eighties as superstar jingle writers –Batteau’s “Heartbeat of America” heads a list of a hundred or more hits as well as hosting their quirky, unpredictable Radio B&B show on WPKN-FM and WPKN.org. Their new CD “Love Remembered, Love Forgot” was recorded at Neale Eckstein’s Fox Run Studios in Sudbury, MA.

“Radio Crystal Blue is primarily a podcast program. This program is the collection of sounds that are generated by top indie and touring artists that are not major-label…just everyone else. I strive to connect one song to another by way of a chord, a lyric, a sentiment based on the time of the month, the year, a season, a common association between 2 artists or labels, a band or songwriter I booked, etc. You really do have to listen to the show to understand what I mean, but, once you do, you’ll feel the flow of this lost art of radio called freeform. I broadcast on Tuesdays, and eventually the show gets uploaded and presented on Big Contact (podcast provider) and the Web at large. I never know how it will end…the songs are chosen spontaneously, tho in advance I’ve chosen as much as which artist from which album…putting together segments generally by degrees of loudness. The middle stuff I put in the beginning…the louder in the middle, and the quiet at the end. Listen at various times of the year and you will pick up on songs I spin once a year as traditions.
I strive to play original music, as new as possible, from artists that currently promote their gigs and news. I stray from playing ‘singles’, ‘covers’, ‘standards’ and the like unless absolutely unavoidable. I believe in playing cuts that don’t always get aired.”

Mike Laureanno ~ Pushing Back Wintertime cover

Mike Laureanno ~ Pushing Back Wintertime cover

Mike Laureanno’s songs have been accused of passing the whistle test with direct honesty. His background in traditional folk music makes for melodies that sound like they were written long ago, while his lyrics make ample use of metaphor and avoid cliché. Mike Laureanno is the real deal Americana: poignant themes, memorable refrains and unforgettable arrangements that echo of traditional folk music from the early 1960s.
Accompanied at times by his two younger brothers Frank and Tom on bass, drums and harmony, Mike’s storytelling will draw you into his world and have you whistling his melodies.

Idlewheel "The Old Roots"

Idlewheel “The Old Roots”

The creative spark that flies between Idlewheel’s Craig Bickhardt and Jack Sundrud (Poco) during their writing sessions glows even more brightly when they’re in the studio and on stage together. The Old Roots – Acoustic Sessions demonstrates this wonderfully. This six song EP made specifically for their annual upper Midwest tour (Jack hails from Oklee, MN) sold so quickly that we thought we’d send it out to our radio friends.
Craig Bickhardt and Jack Sundrud have written over 100 songs together, including the #1 Country Hit for Ty Herndon, “It Must Be Love.”
Their credits are solid and sterling – Bickhardt was a member of renowned Nashville group SKB, while Sundrud enjoyed success with Great Plains and (most recently) Poco. The sound conjures up memories of the feisty, unfettered spirit of early Southern California country-rock, with a dash of the Everly Brothers thrown in.” Barry Alfonso
