Matt Borrello – “A Dollar & A Kiss” Earns Rave Review

Matt Borrello‘s brand new CD “A Dollar & A Kiss” has earned a rave review from John Apice, contributor at No Depression. Read the full review HERE

Review by John Apice – No Depression

Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Guy Clark are all aging Outlaws. Townes Van Zandt, Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings are gone. Where are the new Outlaws?
Well, maybe Matt Borrello could fill one spot. His country is a little edgy, not too much, but he’s taken the singer-songwriter effort, the troubadour folk-singer style and he’s effectively applied it to an alt-country / outlaw recipe. He may appear young but, there’s nothing wimpy here. He has this music, style and presentation down solid and proficient.

A Dollar & A Kiss“, is the second studio album from Boston area singer-songwriter Matt Borrello. Eleven original songs range from solo acoustic folk to full band electric blues and rock. Recorded at Fox Run Studios in Sudbury, MA, the tracks are well arranged and expertly recorded by producer Neale Eckstein and co-producer/percussionist, Steve Jagoda. The album features the talents of musicians Pat Wictor (slide guitar), Tom Bianchi (bass), Matt Nokoa (piano), Brian Strange (organ), and Steve Latanision (violin, mandolin, pedal steel).

Matt Borrello is a traveling singer and guitar player with a repertoire of traditional folk, classic rock, and contemporary original songs. Matt’s insightful songwriting often blends political and personal themes. He performs his own songs and also offers energetic interpretations of classic folk, rock, and blues from the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. dollarkiss2 Born and raised in the small town of Dighton, MA, Matt started playing guitar at 14. Within a year he was writing and gigging and he hasn’t really done much other than that since. Now in his mid-twenties, Matt plays regularly in the Boston, Southern Mass, and Rhode Island area, usually as a solo acoustic act. His passionate performances have earned him recognition in various New England talent showcases and songwriting contests, most notably at the Boston Folk Festival Youth Songwriting Contest. He has also traveled to perform at prestigious venues in the Mid-Atlantic and the Carolinas. He has a not-so-secret fondness for Bob Dylan songs, and performs with Art Tebbetts from New Bedford and Danielle Miraglia from Boston in a handful of annual Bob Dylan Tribute Shows. Matt is also a guitarist-for-hire and loves spontaneous collaborations with other musicians. He has always appeared comfortable on coffeehouse stages, and is equally at home playing a rowdy bar room, intimate house concert, or big festival.

Matt Borrello’s debut album, “Don’t Turn Around”, was self-released in 2010. Since then he has released a few live and studio EPs, gaining some airplay in the Northeast and elsewhere.
Matt in my opinion is one of the finest folksingers I’ve heard in years. He has natural ability and he is both contemporary and traditional.

Borrello’s singing hints of the desperation like that of Dylan and Springsteen (with a better voice).”

Matt will be touring extensively in the coming year in support of the album and has shared the stage with Paul Geremia, Craig Bickhardt, Danielle Miraglia, Buddy Mondlock, Livingston Taylor, Brooks Williams, John Flynn, Ryan Fitzsimmons, Meg Hutchinson, Tripping Lily, The Baker Thomas Band and more at premiere venues such as Club Passim, The Lizard Lounge, The Burren, The Third Fret Coffehouse, The Narrows Center for the Arts, The Cotuit Center for the Arts, The Rose Garden Coffeehouse, Soule Homestead Summer Concert Series, The Church Street Coffeehouse, World Café Live at the Queen, Burlap and Bean, Mountain Spirit and many more.
Upcoming shows include
Feb 06 7:00pm Spire Center for Performing Arts Plymouth, MA US
Mar 25 8:00pm Amazing Things Arts Center Framingham, MA US

By listening to the mp3’s and watching the videos I knew Matt was a very good musician. But by seeing him live I learned what a great performer he is. And of course his music is even better live. He relates to the audience really well. He makes a connection with his listeners that so many musicians his age don’t understand. And it’s all natural for Matt.

Cotuit Center for the Arts Presents “The 5th Annual Bob Dylan Birthday Tribute: This Year the Format’s a Changin’”

Celebrate Bob Dylan’s 74th birthday with Matt Borrello, Art Tebbetts, Danielle Miraglia, and a special guest appearance by James Davis on Saturday, May 9, at 7:30 PM, at the Third Fret Coffeehouse at Cotuit Center for the Arts. Each singer will offer his or her own take on both Dylan’s classics and some of his obscure tunes.

James Davis, a Cape Cod high school student, received unanimous praise for his performances in the Center’s production of “The Beat Goes On” earlier in the season.

New this year is a short “Nod to Bob,” a “name that tune” segment in which the musicians and the audience test each other’s knowledge of Bob. The musicians will play a Dylan tune and audience members will see how fast they can guess the name of the tune. Then audience members will try to stump the musicians by asking them to play what they may think are lesser known Dylan tunes.
The musicians will also take requests from the audience in a special new segment of the show. To make a request in advance of the show, email Tracey at tracey@trespassmusic.org
