- Sing Out! Magazine review ~ Craig Bickhardt “The More I Wonder
Bickhardt polishes his songs like finely cut gems. The lyrics spin tales and limn characters usually pulled from real life and weds them to melodies that drive the stories and propel the songs. Craig is a master craftsman of song and is at the top of his art here. The album is performed and produced with excellence on all levels. Craig is a superb guitarist and a warm, embracing vocalist, and the support players are wonderful. “It Opens” is about seizing opportunities when life places them in your path and, personally, helped me find the grit and boldness I needed this year. When a song has that kind of positive impact I take notice.

Rob’s Music Review
Of course it just so happened that I had just published my album list for 2014, when I came across an album that should definitely be included. I’m talking about Craig Bickhardt’s latest album from Stone Barn Records, which has also released Nathan Bell’s wonderful albums. In the meantime Bickhardt has already become a veteran of the singer-songwriter genre but the record has the freshness of a debut album. Bickhardt threads the beautiful songs together like pearls on a string. His lyrics show a lot of life experience but never get too ponderous or didactic. The production is open and clear and after only a couple of times this album nestles itself comfortably in your head and heart. Excellent musicians, with a special mention of the harmonic vocals of daughter Aislinn Bickhardt, complete the picture. Absolutely recommended for lovers of the genre.”

So much of this album reminds of one of my favorite artists-gone-too-soon, Kirsty MacColl. Golton’s voice is similar to MacColl’s and there is a similar overall feel to the music — serious but hopeful with dashes of island magic. “Echo Point” is a killer story tune, and, in fact, the songwriting throughout this record is top-notch.

Great Albums of 2014 SingOut! Magazine Blood Like A River

Sing Out! Magazine review ~ “Blood Like A River” by Nathan Bell
Nathan Bell’s songs can shake, startle and astonish you. “Names,” the opener, is the most eloquent song I’ve heard in years about soldiers fallen in action. “Blue Kentucky Gone” is portraiture of a father and his daughter who loves to sing. “Fade Out” is a moving song of redemptive love. Nathan’s songs ring urgently true. There’s a lot of life infused in them, but as Nathan set aside music for about two decades he has a lot of life to draw from. The album is spare and sparse the best to let the songs and Nathan’s endearing if gruff voice shine. Every now and again an album comes along that shakes my world so I never quite see it the same again. Blood Like a River is one of those in my world.

Nathan Bell’s BLOOD LIKE A RIVER is without a doubt one of the most powerful, well-written albums I’ve ever heard. If I had to pick my album on the year, that would be it, without question. No Depression

Kelly Walker, host of The Sundilla Music Radio Hour on Troy Public Radio in Auburn, AL 2014 Year End Favorites

Americana Music TimesI could have put this album on this list simply for the song “Names”, which is the opening track. It’s a poignant song about how the soldiers we send to war are real people, not just names we may read in the obituaries, and it’s one of those songs that made me sit up and take notice when I heard it on the radio (WLVR, I believe it was). The rest of the album, though, is more than worth a listen, as Bell spins a series of well-crafted, powerfully delivered, acoustic tales.” Americana Music Times

#94 – Nathan Bell – Blood Like a River (1-1-14) – “Written, recorded and mixed, the album took thirty days to complete in Nathan’s Tennessee mountain home. Saying it is all Nathan Bell is technically correct. Though this is a technological world, the tunes that flow through Blood Like a River are human, not numbers, dots and dashes. The tracks walked by the characters in the tunes are responsible for the outcome of the song as much as their creator.

Nathans and Ronstadt are cashmere. Music you would want to get closer to and not be overwhelmed by. The well-thought-out approaches here are smooth with poignant tales filled with sincerity. Review ~ Sundilla Music – “Click: Songs by Neale Eckstein and Friends” might be considered no more than a vanity project by some, but that’s a sad misconception; this is a fine CD, full of great songs performed by some of the best of the best. No fan of good music will be disappointed with this collection. (And it probably goes without saying that the production, and the photos on the album cover and in the booklet are as top-notch as the songs.)”

No Depression Review ~ “Click is an interesting collection of songs. Though the majority of the tunes are performed and sung by different artists throughout – it does come across as a successful single unit effort. Nothing sounds like it doesn’t belong. It has uniformity, a message, a groove, a style and because every musician is accomplished — they fill out the picture perfectly and Neale Eckstein puts his frame around it.”

4PAN1T Jacob Johnson One Take Jake
No Depression Review
Jacob’s album “One-Take Jake” is filled with crystalline, pyrotechnical guitar playing but he has infused his performance with personality. It runs right down his arms into his fingers, onto the strings — missing not a grain of warmth and meticulous guitar-spirit.
The guitar is not just an instrument in the hands of Jacob Johnson – it’s his soul-mate.
His original songs are wonderfully performed and sound as if we may have heard them before. Then, in an effort to confirm his ability to interpret he whips out a Johnny Cash tune: “Big River” and virtually reinvents the song.

2014 Year End Favorites Kelly Walker, host of The Sundilla Music Radio Hour on Troy Public Radio in Auburn, AL

The Muse’s Muse ReviewFrom start to finish, “Race to the Bottom” by Paddy Mills is an impressive collection of music. The songwriting is gold standard – full of consistent musical experiences, each one possessing a unique personality, flair, and signature groove. Note for note, song for song, there isn’t really a weak piece in this entire catalog. The writing and playing abilities of Paddy Mills and company are rock solid. The melodies and harmonies are well crafted, and the lyrical content is packed to the hilt with good old-fashioned conventional wisdom and a very appealing blue collar Folk filled atmosphere. At the end of the day Paddy Mills brings the mojo, and is clearly a marquee talent. No wonder he has so many impressive accolades. One would be wise to keep a watchful eye on him over the years to come – down in his new home. But perhaps he’s beyond all of that.

Blabber ‘n’ Smoke Review of EP “In The Bleak Midwinter”.
David Llewellyn & Ida Kristin offer up their reading of Christina Rossetti’s In The Bleak Midwinter, the song that has snuck Bert Jansch into many a home via numerous commercial Christmas compilations. Llewellyn & Kristin stay true to the familiar arrangement with its wintry air and old-fashioned Dickensian Christmas feel while they both sing well. The pair have their debut album, Songs Around The Kitchen Table out soon but in the meantime you can buy In The Bleak Midwinter.

We’re getting excited that our EP “In The Bleak Midwinter” is getting airplay in countries as diverse as the US, UK, Netherlands, Italy, France and Belgium (click to listen/buy here on the right) and are looking forward to the full album release to radio of “Songs Around The Kitchen Table” (Feb 1st 2015). Tangled-cover-2 Jane Fallon Tangled In A Tree
Review ~ The Noise Boston
Fallon makes the type of music that requires you to leave your cynicism at home. For many a Bostonian, this would probably be a deal breaker, but it’s their loss. The music here is pretty, intelligent and expressive, mostly folk but with some country flair as well. Fallon’s songs have as much PMA as the Bad Brains and enough ruminations on friendship to fit in perfectly on a 7 Seconds record. Maybe the punks and the folkies aren’t all that different! The band is solid throughout, led by the subtly great playing of guitarist Kenny Selcer. The only real misstep is “Talk to Me,” which rails against the kids and their texting and tweeting and Facebooking. It’s done in a jokey manner, but still comes way too close to “Hey kids, get off my lawn!” territory.

“WHRW is a free-format radio station that caters to locals, Binghamton college students, or anyone else in the world cool enough to listen to our stream online. Mostly, though, we just do what we like and it’s worked out well so far. We’re the only free-format radio station in the Southern Tier, and as such we do our best to keep it lit 24/7, so that whenever the need arises for quality radio programming of any kind, we, the disciples of Moe, are there to fill that void” VISIT HERE

Bob Sherman WFUV ~ “Though Robert Sherman’s background is in classical music, his long-running program Woody’s Children has made him a de facto authority on contemporary folk. The long-running show got its start at WQXR in 1969, a natural time to spark the interest in folk music that continues today. The series moved to WFUV in the fall of 1999.”

Blabber ‘n’ Smoke
“A Glasgow view of Americana and related music and writings. Blabber ‘n’ Smoke was first of all a song by Captain Beefheart. It also served as a title for a column in the great UK rock magazine ZigZag. I’ve purloined it here as it just about sums up what I do in my daily life, all I do is blabber ‘n’ smoke, blabber ‘n’ smoke etc etc. So, here, for your amusement is my blabber ‘n’ smoke.”

Rob’s Music – Netherlands
I’m a bit of a list freak so you can find on this site lists all the concerts that I have visited, my personal album year lists and a concert with recommended by me gigs I sometimes himself will be present.
Also, the picture and sound may of course not missing so there are films with excerpts from concerts I’ve attended. Also music reviews of albums and concert reports will belong to the possibilities.

What is Twangville?
Twangville began in early 2005 by humble means as a place to post playlists for our friends. It wasn’t long before we expanded to covering releases, reviews, downloads, links and more. Ultimately, we just want to help spread the word about some of our favorite musicians who often don’t get the credit they deserve. In search of twang, we typically look beyond traditional and mainstream country into genres like americana, alt-country, indie, rock, folk and blues … or just about anything that features a guitar. You’ll find that we tend to emphasize the alternative side of alt-country.Visit HERE
